Amy said her goodbyes as she bounded off to try some new potion experiment. I told Joe he could go with, but he was determined to escort me back to my room.

“You know, for a first lesson, that was pretty awesome.”

I shrugged. “I suppose so.” I held the ring up under the light. “I wonder what my mom felt like when she wore it? I wonder what she felt like before the ring, you know?”

Joe nodded, keeping pace with me as we walked. “Yeah, I think I do. When my dad died, no one talked about him. It was like, Mom was hurting so bad she couldn’t say anything about him because it made her want to cry. After a while, it was easier to just avoid the subject like we’d done for so long.” Joe sighed. “But the older I got, the more I realized, I wanted to know him. Know what he was like and if he had any of the same ambitions or struggles.”

“Yes!” I said. “It’s exactly like that.” I reached over and took Joe’s hand. “You’ve never talked to me about your dad before.”

“Well, I suppose it’s like I said. Easier to not bring it up. But, seeing you struggle and learn these little pieces about your mom and dad…it reminds me of my own questions. I just wanted you to know I get it, and I’m here for you.”

“Awe, aren’t you too so sweet,” a whiny voice spoke.

Ugh. It couldn’t be, but it was. “Tally,” I said. “Imagine seeing you here. At this very moment that I’m here.”

Cousin Tally blinked prettily, her eyes zoning in on Joe and my hand like a hawk. Instinctively, I dropped Joe’s hand, immediately regretting it when I saw the look on his face.

“Why’s it such a surprise?” Cousin Tally said. “There was an opening at the school. Some lame student dropped out awhile back, so I was first in line to take their place. Oh, wait…that was you.” She laughed.

“Really? I thought we were playing nice,” I said.

“Only in front of Aunt Judy.”

“Well, good to know.” I rolled my eyes.

“You know, neither of us is really interested in talking to you, so you probably should just…leave,” Joe said.

Tally, looking appalled, flipped her hair. “Suits me. See you losers never.” She stomped away.

“Wow. And here I thought she was getting better, not worse. How old is she?” Joe said.

I chuckled. “You know why she acted like that, right?”

“Because she’s an awful human being?” Joe said.

I hit his shoulder and snickered. “No, well, sometimes she is. Unfortunately for me, I know underneath, she’s not as bad as that.” I sighed. “She’s just really superficial, with low self-esteem.”

“I’m fairly sure you got the low self-esteem part wrong. She loves herself way more than anyone I know.” Joe shook his head.

“Come on, we’re almost back to the guest suites.” I tugged Joe faster. I didn’t want to risk running into any other unpleasant surprises. “I think she went completely crazy on me because she saw us holding hands.
